The Net Makers

The Net Makers

Passed down from mothers to daughters since the 18th century, this is a fundamentally female sector. When a girl was born in a fishing family, they would say "we have one more net mender."

Working at the docks in the open air, under the sun, in cold and damp conditions. Always with their eyes on the nets, because without their work and their important labor of repairing nets, the boats could not go out fishing.

They are an essential part of our maritime culture, women with weathered hands who accompanied their work with songs and stories. A place of work but also of encounter.

They became professionalized in 2004 with the creation of the O Peirao Federation, from which different local associations would emerge.

However, due to the intrinsic danger of the work, among society there is still the feeling that it is a purely masculine profession.
